Client and context

Profectus has delivered structured testing and evaluation activities for Defence, primarily within the Joint Collective Training Branch (JCTB), operating across the Defence Training and Experimentation Network (DTEN). This work has supported the validation, readiness and sustainment of the simulation and ICT environments used for collective training, where system behaviour, interoperability, configuration integrity and reliability must be verified prior to operational use.

In parallel, Profectus has delivered comprehensive testing and evaluation services within Defence Export Controls, supporting the delivery of new digital capabilities in a regulated operational environment. Across both settings, Profectus’ testing capability is grounded in disciplined configuration control, deep environment knowledge and Defence aligned governance rather than isolated functional testing.

The engagement

Profectus was engaged to plan and execute testing and evaluation across the full lifecycle of Defence simulation and ICT capability: establishing configuration transparency, conducting system and integration testing of simulation platforms, verifying readiness ahead of training events, and delivering the formal test governance required to release operationally critical systems into production. All activity was conducted within Defence security and governance constraints, supported by DISP Level 3 personnel controls and ISO 27001 aligned information handling processes.

The challenge

Testing operationally critical Defence systems and live simulation environments placed several compounding demands on the work:

  • Incomplete baselines: existing configuration information was often incomplete, inconsistent or fragmented across multiple sources, preventing repeatable and reliable testing
  • Live environments: simulation platforms had to be verified without disrupting scheduled training activities, where an exercise window cannot be moved
  • Full traceability: every engineering change and test outcome had to be fully traceable, tested and aligned to governance requirements while systems remained in operational use
  • Regulated assurance: capability releases within Defence Export Controls demanded formal test phases, security control validation and stakeholder acceptance under strict auditability constraints

Our approach

Profectus applied a structured, configuration-led testing approach delivered by cleared specialists across Levels Junior to 4.

Configuration transparency first

Profectus enabled effective testing by first establishing configuration transparency across the DTEN environment. Comprehensive discovery and configuration capture identified simulation hosts, servers, network components, storage systems and software services, documenting configuration items, dependencies and relationships within controlled systems of record. This authoritative baseline allowed testing to transition from reactive fault identification to structured verification of environment readiness and stability.

System and integration testing

Profectus conducted system level and integration testing across DTEN simulation platforms, validating interactions between simulation engines, supporting infrastructure, network services and management tooling. Personnel confirmed that interfaces functioned as designed and that changes introduced through remediation, upgrades or reconfiguration did not negatively impact training outcomes, assessing system stability, resource utilisation, failure scenarios and performance thresholds.

Readiness verification

Ahead of scheduled training events, Profectus validated that simulation environments were configured correctly, that operational dependencies were satisfied and that known defects were either resolved or formally accepted. This included confirming that live environments aligned with documented configuration baselines, verifying software versions and confirming changes had been implemented in accordance with approved change records, reducing the risk of environment failure during training.

Formal test governance

Within Defence Export Controls, Profectus planned and executed all formal testing phases including Production Verification Testing (PVT), Business Verification Testing (BVT) and User Acceptance Testing (UAT), validating system functionality, workflow behaviour, data integrity, security controls and operational usability against defined requirements, and supporting Defence stakeholders through acceptance activities.

  • Modernisation assurance: functional testing, regression testing and data integrity validation during ICT modernisation and sustainment, with defects logged, prioritised, tracked and retested to confirm corrective effectiveness before acceptance
  • Successful capability releases: coordinated test execution, defect identification and resolution across PVT, BVT and UAT, directly enabling successful capability releases into production within Defence Export Controls
  • Automation validation: technical validation of automation and tooling, verifying script behaviour, confirming idempotent execution and validating error handling so improvements were adopted safely within controlled Defence systems
